Usability isn't a checklist. It's the absence of friction that the user didn't sign up for.
The three quiet wins
Most interfaces that feel great in use get three things right, usually without drawing attention to them:
- Hit targets that forgive imprecision — buttons large enough that you don't have to aim.
- State that's always visible — the user can tell what's selected, loading, saved, broken, at a glance.
- Reversible actions — every destructive action has an undo path within a few seconds.
What this isn't
It isn't minimalism, and it isn't a particular visual style. Usable interfaces come in every aesthetic. The trick is treating the user's attention as scarce.
